  • Don't shop when you're hungry and carry a list. You'll be more likely to stick to your budget and nutritious food choices.
  • Most fresh fruits and vegetables are available year round, but some may be less expensive when they are at the peak of production.
  • If fruits and veggies are on special, buy more. Some freeze well or you can use them in a dish, like soups or casseroles that can be frozen.
  • Visit a farm that allows you to 'pick your own produce.' It's a great way for kids to learn how their food is grown.
  • Spend most of your time in the produce, bread, meat and dairy sections.
  • If you are pressed for time, look for time savers like fresh fruit and veggies, bagged salads and fresh cut fruits that you're more likely to eat.
  • Use store flyers to help you find specials.
